    Unit 1 Reading: Literature

    A Study in Empathy and Connections - Students will explain the events of a literary text by describing in depth a character, setting, or event, and by identifying a text’s theme.  Students will use specific details and examples from the text to support descriptions and/or inferences.  Students will also summarize the texts read throughout the unit. Throughout this unit, students will also explore how reading fictional text increases their empathy for others.

    Unit 1 Writing: Narrative 

    A Study in Communication and Empathy - Students will convey imagined experiences and events through narrative, using sensory details, and story structures that develop characters that are realistic by making clear what is happening and who is involved. Throughout the unit, students will explore the concept of empathy through their writing.

    Math

    Unit 2 Fraction Equivalence and Comparison - In this unit, students extend their prior understanding of equivalent fractions and comparison of fractions.  Students will use fraction strips, tape diagrams, number lines, and benchmark fractions to make sense of the size of fractions, generate equivalent fractions, and compare and order fractions with denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 100.

    Unit 1 Social Sciences 

    A Study in Inquiry and Interpretation - This unit serves as an introduction to the study of social studies. Students will be introduced to the different types of social sciences and how each strand helps us to interpret our world. During this unit students will learn and engage in historical inquiry and thinking as well as in disciplinary practices such as developing questions and planning inquiry, evaluating and gathering sources and developing claims and using evidence.
